Most Famous Varieties Of Indian Mangoes - I

Alphonso mango

Alphonso mango is a seasonal fruit, considered to be among the most superior varieties of the fruit in terms of sweetness, richness and flavour. 

The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general and military expert who helped establish Portuguese colonies in India. The Portuguese introduced grafting on mango trees to produce extraordinary varieties like Alphonso. The fruit was then introduced to the Konkan region in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and some parts of southern state of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. 

It is also one of the most expensive varieties of mango and is grown mainly in the western part of India including Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Raigad districts and in the Konkan region of India. Each mango weighs between 150 and 300 grams (5.3 and 10.6 oz).

Badami
Badami is Karnataka’s leading mango variety. It is often called as Karnataka’s own Alphonso. The reason being the taste and texture of Badami is sane as that of Alphonso.

Chaunsa
Chaunsa
Chaunsa is mainly produced in Mirpur Khas Sindh and Multan, Sahiwal Punjab in Pakistan. This variety of mango was originally made popular by Sher Shah Suri throughout the subcontinent. While commemorating his victory over Humayun at Chausa, he gave his favorite mango the name Chaunsa. Chaunsa mango has a golden yellow color when ripe. It is soft, almost fibreless and has an aromatic pleasant sweet flavor. The unique taste and richness in its flavor makes it a worldwide favorite. Chaunsa is commonly called the "King of Mangoes". Overall it is considered the best mango in terms of its rich aroma, sweet taste, juicy pulp and high nutritional value.

Malgova or Mulgoba
Malgova or Malgoa is an important mango cultivar grown in Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India. It is a large round fruit (typically 300-500gms), it has a small stone and is very juicy and fragrant. It is generally considered to be one of the best mangoes, the "Alphonso of South India". Its production area is centred on the districts of Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu, as well as neighbouring parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

A DNA analysis of 50 varieties of mango obtained several DNA clusters but found the Malgova to be the most distinct.
